Sydney: Hello listeners, this is your editor, Sydney, with today’s messages:

Once upon a time, there was a silly little, I mean, a very serious big kid podcast about a giant mech. Its listeners were just the best people, and the cast loves them and wishes good unto them and their families, found and otherwise. The cast also loves hearing from these listeners, so if those listeners wanted, they could join the official podcast discord! The link can be found in the show notes. And if these listeners wanted to listen to even more, they could back the show’s Patreon, which gives them access to bonus episodes, campfire conversations, and other fun rewards.

And with that, we wrap up today’s announcements and head into Season 2, Episode 40: A Nice Reveal Moment. And so...

“Join us, for now our tale to yours attaches

To carry hope: a Knight of Shreds and Patches.”

Kit (as Birdie): Last time on a Knight of Shreds and Patches, I came to terms with a lot of things. I had a conversation with quite a few people. I had conversations with marathon and with Cameron and with Cassidy and all in all, I guess I came to realize that it's okay to give yourself away to people sometimes. And, you know, it's not always the greatest thing to stay bottled up and alone and moving from place to place. Even if it makes things easier. It's good that loving other people and and caring for other people and being cared for in turn is hard because that means that you've worked towards it together and it makes it more meaningful and I don't think I'll ever leave the Patina. They’re my family.

[radio static]

Episode Start:

Nick: The central courtyard of the spa in French Lick is peaceful. The sky above is dark, speckled with stars and the gentle glow of the shattered moon. We can see a light steam rising from the central pool of this courtyard that is heated by geothermic activity and there are several smaller pools lined in redstone that are crystal clear but not steaming - somewhere for people to cool off during their relaxation. The ground between the pools is closely cut soft ryegrass and paths of smooth river pebbles. There are low lights lighting the ground so people can step surely, but besides a scattering of chairs and lounges, the area's left open and simple, promoting an openness in the guests and relaxation amongst anyone who comes to visit this spa. It's quiet at night. The sun has gone down and the Patina assembles to spend some time together relaxing.

Penn: Marathon is out by the hot springs already taking up her third stance trying to figure out how to position herself to look the most cool, yet also the most casual at the same time when the rest of the Patina arrives in a few minutes. She's settled on - she's pulled one of the chaise lounges up to the side of the hot springs so that she can dangle her calves in while leaning backwards and propping an arm up on top of the chair in something that feels like it's cool and casual but looks slightly awkward from afar. She's wearing red swim trunks that go about midway down her thighs and a sports material bomber jacket that's also red and white, and curiously, it's unzipped and there is nothing underneath. Marathon is tying up her hair for the third time before just letting it loose again and muttering to herself.

Penn (as Marathon): Cool, casual. Cool, casual. Cool, casual.

Penn: And then shakes herself out a little bit and turns towards where the rest of the Patina is in their rooms.

Penn (as Marathon): [yelling] Y'all the water feels terrific!

Nick: The next thing we see is the door to Emma's room as Emma pulls it open and prepares to head down the hall.

Cameron: So Emma comes out of her room wearing her swimsuit. It's a black asymmetrical one piece that has a ruffle going up over one shoulder and the other shoulder is a spaghetti strap. And while overall it's a fairly simple suit, the section that would traditionally be uncovered in a bikini is covered in a black mesh and there are stripes of the regular swimsuit fabric crossing randomly around her stomach and she has a towel under one arm and closes her door and wanders down one door and knocks on Cassidy's.

Sydney: Cassidy's door opens enough to show her face and Cassidy sticks her head out and she goes

Sydney (as Cassidy): Okay, Emma, how comfortable are you with um, skin?

Cameron (as Emma): [sigh] Uh, we'll say extremely.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Okay.

Sydney: Cassidy opens the door to let Emma in. She is currently wearing kind of a traditional style bikini bottoms. It's a dark purple with some white and black detailing in a complicated pattern. On her hip the swimsuit is connected by a ring that just shows skin under it and currently no top, but she does have her sling still over her shoulder because that doesn't get to come off for this exercise and ushers Emma into the room standing approximately behind the door so that there's no other eyes that were not previously confirmed consenting.

Cameron (as Emma): All right. How... how do you want to go about doing this in a way to not hurt your arm?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, well, the good news is if you -

Sydney: Cassidy grabs the top off of her bed.

Sydney (as Cassidy): If you take this and wrap it around me, I think you can get it under the sling without having to mess with anything.

Sydney: The top is a halter top, connected by a similar ring at her sternum, and otherwise ties behind her neck and behind her back.

Cameron (as Emma): All righty.

Cameron: Emma takes it by the straps that will tie around Cassidy's neck and steps behind her and flings the suit around her as if she had just sat down in a barber's chair and was getting the gown put on, and does a quick bow in the top knot so that it will at least stay put so that she can start working around the arm to get the suit actually covering what it needs to cover.

Sydney: Cassidy is watching the process in the mirror that's on the back of the door.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, now that I'm being operated on -

Cameron (as Emma): I'm thinking through logistics. Hold on.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Good - good swimsuit.

Cameron (as Emma): Left arm. Thank you.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yes, left arm.

Cameron (as Emma): Uh~. Okay, here we go. I think I have a plan.

Cameron: So Emma takes the left hand strap and gently grabs Cassidy's elbow, and very slowly lifts it separating it slightly from her side so that she can thread the bikini through it and then sets her arm back down. And is like,

Cameron (as Emma): Okay, so that's gonna stay there.

Cameron: And then goes back around to the back grabs both strings and ties the bottom string and it's, we're actually tightening the suit now.

Cameron (as Emma): Is this tight enough?

Sydney: Cassidy wriggles a little bit and looks in the mirror.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yes.

Cameron (as Emma): You're also going to be holding it on with one arm just kind of by default.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): So

Sydney (as Cassidy): I think it'll be fine. Let me -

Cameron (as Emma): Well, I gotta adjust the top part because we we're missing the suit. I'm not going to leave the suit going over your left arm. [laughing]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Okay, that's fair.

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing] I'm gonna get it to underneath that.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well just, just tell me where you want things,

Cameron (as Emma): Yep.

Sydney (as Cassidy): - or move me as needed.

Cameron (as Emma): Can do.

Cameron: So Emma unties the top string again, walks around to the front and takes the string and tries to thread it through between Cassidy's arm and chest around her wrist so that she doesn't have to move her arm at all - there's enough space in between for her to just slip it through and then pulls the string out and is like

Cameron (as Emma): Okay to actually get it to cover your boob, we are going to have to move your arm though.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Cool.

Cameron (as Emma): Okay.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, I assume this is not one of those swimming type spa events.

Cameron (as Emma): You know, we are the only ones here but also probably not. Um.

Cameron: Emma once again, slowly lifts Cassidy's arm by the elbow and pulls the suit to where it's actually supposed to be sitting.

Sydney (as Cassidy): I mean, it's I'm slowly getting better.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, no, it's healing up nicely.

Cameron: And Emma is back behind Cassidy now tying the neck bow actually at the tension that you would want it for the suit to stay on and gently runs her thumb over the healing exit wound on Cassidy shoulder.

Cameron (as Emma): It doesn't look good...

Sydney (as Cassidy): No.

Cameron (as Emma): - still, but it's it's healing nicely. You've been doing a good job keeping it still.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, I'm it's gonna be some workouts once I could take the sling off and have full range of motion again to like, get everything back but happens.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, I mean, so you - we should be able to take this sling off in, I dunno, within a week. The cuts are healing up well - I'm not really worried about them opening up again, but better safe than sorry, since you've still got some of the stitch wounds.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): By the way, probably don't put your shoulder in the water.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, no.

Cameron (as Emma): [overlapping] Figure you probably knew that.

Sydney (as Cassidy): [overlapping] I'm gonna be waist deep today.

Cameron (as Emma): Okay. Yeah.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, as long as you're, I mean, still fine with helping with this and to helping with braids and everything. Sorry to put that on you, I guess.

Cameron (as Emma): I am totally happy to help. It is, having been [nostalgic laugh]. My sister had to do this for me when I broke my right arm, so

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yup.

Cameron (as Emma): I very much sympathize with uh, not being able to maneuver everything like you normally would.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah~.

Cameron (as Emma): But if you feel secure, then I think you're good.

Sydney: Cassidy gives an experimental knee bend and straightens.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, I think we're approximately in place.

Cameron (as Emma): Cool.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Thank you~.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm. No problem.

Nick: So Emma and Cassidy head towards the courtyard of the spa and Marathon you see them exiting the main doorway out towards the relaxation area together.

Penn: Marathon has repositioned herself so that she's moved a pool equipment cabinet over so that she can have one elbow leaning on it so that she has that leaning stance and then as she sees them coming, she feigns like she wasn't looking and then turns her head. So she's like,

Penn (as Marathon): Hey- y'all. Hey y'all! What's, what's going on~? Uh. [nervous sputtering] Welcome to the pool. [nervous panting/laughter] [underbreath to self] Smooth. Casual.

Cameron (as Emma): Thanks Marathon!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yep. Nice pile of furniture.

Penn (as Marathon): Um, oh, uh~.

Penn: And as she starts to clock what they're both wearing, Marathon starts stumbling.

Penn (as Marathon): [voice breaking] Cass- arms and Cassidy. Uh Emma and Miss Cassidy. It is nice to see you. You both look very uh um, graceful and uh beautiful in your swimsuits.

Cameron (as Emma): Thank you.

Sydney: Cassidy gives an attempt at a curtsy but only has one hand.

Penn (as Marathon): Yes, yes.

Penn: And Marathon gives a little golf clap.

Penn (as Marathon): Uh wha is - do y'all know, when Birdie's joining us?

Cameron (as Emma): Uh she just got back from walking, so probably within a few minutes.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, with Camden~. That was pretty - that was seems like she was gone for a little bit. It seems like it's went pretty good, right? Maybe?

Penn: Marathon switches her hand in that so-so motion.

Cameron (as Emma): It could have just been they walked around the perimeter of the property too.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): I don't think the time it took suggests anything necessarily.

Kit (as Birdie): Okay.

Kit: It's actually at this moment that Birdie enters and is pulling her hair up into a slightly hastily done up do in order to keep it out of the water. She has definitely been listening to the conversation about her and Camden's walk and so while she's walking over says

Kit (as Birdie): It actually went very well. Thank you very much, Marathon.

Kit: Birdie is wearing a bikini that's in a lighter pink color - it's two tones, so the main parts of the bikini are a darker shade, and then the cloth that lines the main pieces is a lighter pink. It sort of is a modified one piece in a way as the top part and the bottom part are connected by two little straps that have a small buckle in them. The top part comes up into a little faux halter moment that encircles her neck, and it's not the most amount of clothing, but it's a swimsuit and she's happy.

Penn (as Marathon): Whoa uh, Birdie.

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm?

Penn (as Marathon): You're really - you're really hot. [laugh]

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing]

Sydney: Cassidy is looking at like four different places and only three of them are Birdie.

Kit (as Birdie): Thank you, Marathon. You're very hot. [laugh]

Penn (as Marathon): Thanks. You have a belly button piercing?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah. Yeah I don't think it's ever come up before. I mean, I normally try and cover it so it doesn't get caught in anything while we're, like out in the nature and doing missions and stuff, so... Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): Well. [sputters in gay] I don't know if I speak for everyone, I assume, but thank you. Um.

Sydney (as Cassidy): [surprised laugh]

Cameron (as Emma): [laughs in ace]

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh] You're welcome, Marathon. I'm glad that you like my swimsuit. [laugh]

Kit: Birdie is definitely blushing a little bit while she gets into the hotspring.

Cameron (as Emma): I'm still trying to figure out the logistics of how you put that on.

Kit (as Birdie): Um, well. Okay, so like, it's

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing] There's too many straps.

Kit (as Birdie): Um, so

Cameron (as Emma): My brain is confused.

Kit (as Birdie): It buckles in a couple different places in the back. Like there's one buckle for the collar in the back and then there's one, you know, securing the top and so you kind of pull on the bottoms and then, like -

Cameron (as Emma): [overlap] [laugh] Strap yourself in?

Kit (as Birdie): [overlap] - secure the top. [end overlap] Yeah, secure the top.

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing]

Kit (as Birdie): So it's like,

Cameron (as Emma): Okay.

Kit (as Birdie): it's kinda like a one piece, you know? It's not too complicated.

Cameron (as Emma): Okay.

Kit (as Birdie): It's weirder than it looks.

Penn (as Marathon): I mean, absolutely no pressure, but if you ever wanted to demonstra- you know what? No, that was - I'm sorry, Birdie. That was completely out of left field. Um.

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh]

Sydney: Cassidy's eyes were following the description of the buckles. [laugh]

Kit (as Birdie): Marathon...

[all but Marathon laugh]

Kit (as Birdie): I missed you.

Kit: And she punches Marathon in the shoulder.

Penn (as Marathon): Ha ha.

Sydney (as Cassidy): So Marathon you're you're going to a hotspring wearing a jacket? Is that the plan?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah?

Penn (as Marathon): It's it's cool. It's a windbreaker and it's red. Um. But it is getting pretty hot, isn't it?

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm.

Penn: And Marathon starts to take off her jacket and there is just nothing under her jacket. It is just a showcase of chest.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, okay. Yes.

Kit: Birdie nods in appreciation.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Ah um. Hm.

Penn (as Marathon): Oof. I haven't swam in forever, but yeah, we used to go swimming a lot with the derby team.

Cameron (as Emma): I mean, I think you're gonna be doing more sitting than swimming given the size of these pools.

Penn (as Marathon): That's true. I mean, that's kind of what we did, but um - no, how was your uh [stammering and throat clearing] Camden walk, Miss Birdie?

Kit (as Birdie): Ah uh. Ah um~. [laugh] Um.

Kit: Birdie is now having to fully twist her head away from Marathon in order to not appreciate the showcase of chest and just is scratching the back of her neck just,

Kit (as Birdie): [demuring noises] It went well. They invited me back to their room.

Sydney: Cassidy has taken five steps away from the hot tub and it's like

Sydney (as Cassidy): I mm. Do we - I - d-. [start over] I could grab us drinks.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, sure. Uh,

Cameron (as Emma): Cassidy you only have one hand...

Penn (as Marathon): [overlapping] Are you feeling like drinks? Do you want help?

Sydney (as Cassidy): [overlapping] Emma can help me grab us drinks? [need to escape laugh]

Cameron (as Emma): Oh-

Penn (as Marathon): I can also if -

Kit (as Birdie): [said like a swooning ingenue in a romance novel] Oh, Marathon.

Penn: Marathon starts stepping up, starts un-leaning from her position on this watersports chest.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Oh, actually, well, I suppose Camden is - that's their job is help, so... orders for drinks?

Cameron (as Emma): If if you want to grab drinks, I can come with you. We're the ones who aren't wet yet. [ ;-) ]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh is this a, this is a Emma Cassidy adventure. I'm sorry. Yes. Why don't you two - Yes. Get get get drinks.

Kit (as Birdie): [mega annoying little sister energy] If you're sure you don't want Marathon to go with you, o-kay~.

Sydney (as Cassidy): The drinks would be on the floor.

Sydney: Cassidy says she walks away.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, ouch. Yeah. [soft exhale] Classic. But nope. [sad noise] Mm.

Cameron: Emma looks both confused and amused and follows after Cassidy.

Kit: Birdie is so happy. [laugh]

Penn (as Marathon): So~? How was i- how did I do? How was wing womaning?

Penn: Marathon is still very flustered.

Kit (as Birdie): Oh, I mean, you know, I appreciate you getting me the walk with them. They're very sweet. It went like I said, it went well. They - probably gonna hang out after this.

Penn (as Marathon): Like hang out, yeah? Well, [laughs in appreciation of Birdie's sexual magnetism] it's Birdie, I mean.

Kit (as Birdie): [slightly offended noise] Like, like, yeah~, but you know. [giggle] Like, okay, I can't deny it.

Penn (as Marathon): I - not that you couldn't hang out platonically or something, but [dying inside noise]

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah I know. I'm just giving you shit. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. I'm just ribbing you. Remember?

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, yeah. Mm.

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm.

Penn (as Marathon): Sorry. My brain is fogged up right now. Oh my gosh. I mean, like I said, you were very hot Birdie. Um also, um, everyone here is really hot. Cassidy and Emma, did you see Emma's arms? Did you see Cassidy's shoulders?

Kit (as Birdie): Oh, yeah. Mhm. I am a I am an appreciator of um, fine uh, of um [laugh]

Penn (as Marathon): The-

Kit (as Birdie): Yes. Muscle, muscular aesthetic forms.

Penn (as Marathon): [strangled] Yep.

Kit (as Birdie): And I mean, look, I mean, you're quite the specimen yourself, Marathon.

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, thank you. Thank you.

Penn: And Marathon seems like she finally realizes that she has a body.

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I uh,

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): I'm pretty strong, right? Ha ha! Got the - do you think Cassidy's impressed?

Kit (as Birdie): I -

Penn (as Marathon): Obviously she thinks I'll drop stuff, but like - No, you know what? Don't tell me. I'm not gonna let that affect my decision. I'm just going. I I

Kit (as Birdie): Can can I still just say it though?

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah, yeah, sorry.

Kit (as Birdie): [as if gossiping at a sleepover] Cassidy's totally into you. [giddy giggle]

Penn (as Marathon): [mock yell] I hope -

Kit (as Birdie): She was totally staring.

Kit: Birdie's kicking her feet a little under the water.

Penn (as Marathon): Y'all are wearing, like, like fancy swimsuits. Am I? Am I - was I -

Kit (as Birdie): I think we all can appreciate your swimsuit, Marathon.

Penn (as Marathon): Okay.

Kit (as Birdie): I think you're perfect, actually.

Penn (as Marathon): Thank you. Thank you. This is the I mean, this is just my old suit I packed for when we would travel for derby. So

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, I mean, it's affordable. It's certainly not gonna take up a lot of space.

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah, I know. I love these these shorts. They've been with me a long time. And the windbreaker - very rad. I picked that up when we were clothing shopping but I don't need that anymore, I guess. It is kind of hot but it was pretty cool. Pretty cool. Um,

Kit (as Birdie): Made for a nice, a nice reveal moment. Yep.

Penn (as Marathon): [confused] Reveal... Oh, like my arms? Yeah. [laugh] Yeah.

Kit (as Birdie): Sure Marathon. [soft laugh]

Nick: Emma and Cassidy as you look for where you could find drinks, there is a wet bar just off of the dining room where you had dinner. You can see that Camden has already cleared away the meal that you shared and taking a look around the wet bar, you were able to assemble your preference of cocktails to bring back out to the hot spring area.

Cameron (as Emma): So~ we retreated pretty fast. [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Um. Uh. Hmm. Yeah. Hm. Huh.

Sydney: Cassidy is looking at the alcohol working her jaw. No organized thoughts have yet bubbled to the surface.

Cameron: Emma is just kind of staring at Cassidy waiting for her brain to reload. [laugh]

Sydney: Cassidy takes a deep breath in and a deep breath out and then looks at Emma and then looks back at the wet bar.

Sydney (as Cassidy): I don't know how you're functioning like with rational thought.

Cameron (as Emma): Uh~ would you perhaps be referring to Marathon's suit?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well she she's got, you know, a solid half of one.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): And Birdie also has a solid half of one.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah Birdie's is, Birdie's is cool. I like Birdie's.

Sydney: Cassidy starts sorting through alcohols and starts scooping ice into glasses.

Cameron: Emma crosses her arms and leans against the wall next to the wet bar.

Sydney (as Cassidy): I'm making tropical things. There are little umbrellas in that container - in that [slight pause] cup? That's what that's called.

Cameron (as Emma): Uh huh. Do you do you need me to open the umbrellas?

Sydney (as Cassidy): That yes, that -

Cameron (as Emma): Okay.

Sydney (as Cassidy): - would be helpful.

Cameron: Emma starts opening tiny baby umbrellas.

Sydney: Cassidy had not yet gotten as far as plotting logistics of how to do that with one arm, but is able to whip up some lightly colored tropical smelling drinks and takes umbrellas from Emma's open hands, sets up to each drink and then looks back at Emma.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Okay, well, the I can hold mine.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): I I - if I, if I tried to take a tray back to the thing they, we would not have drinks. So this is your job, oh, invincible to our earthly delights.

Cameron (as Emma): I mean, y'all are all very attractive, but like, uh, yeah. Marathon just popin' her chest out was a bit of a surprise, but

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, it's fine. I'm, I - I am prepared. I have -

Cameron (as Emma): Are you? [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): - steeled myself to the idea. I can handle this as if I was not um, I don't know.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yep.

Cameron (as Emma): I recommend either staring at the floor or making direct eye contact. At her eyes.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Ah yes.

Cameron (as Emma): Specifically, by the way.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Noted, thank you.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm. Are you are you safe to carry your drink? [laugh]

Sydney: Cassidy holds her drink against her chest with her hand. Also, having the cold outside of the glass from the ice help be a little bit grounding.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Everything is great. Good spa time. Yes.

Cameron (as Emma): All right Cass. Very convincing.

Cameron: Emma is picking up the other drinks and setting one of them in her palm and another one across her fingers so she can hold two cups in one hand and picks up the other one her other hand.

Cameron (as Emma): So are we heading back out?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yep, let's do it.

Cameron (as Emma): You picked up the your drink but then you didn't move. [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well you - I needed to make sure we had enough hands.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, got it.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Okay, good.

Cameron (as Emma): Lead the way? Do you need me to lead the way? [laughing]

Sydney (as Cassidy): No, I can do it. That's fine. We're here.

Cameron (as Emma): Okay.

Sydney (as Cassidy): I got this.

Cameron (as Emma): Okay, if -

Sydney: Cassidy straightens her back.

Cameron (as Emma): If you need to leave at any point, let me know and I can create a distraction for you. [laughing]

Sydney (as Cassidy): You are already a distraction, but I appreciate it. Yes.

Cameron (as Emma): [sigh]

Sydney: And Cassidy walks back towards the hot tub.

Cameron: Emma is shaking her head and smiling slightly to herself and follows Cassidy.

Nick: And Marathon and Birdie, you see from your position in the pool and sitting on the edge, Cassidy and Emma coming back with drinks.

Penn: Marathon's now dipping her calves back in the pool, leaning over in the thinker position as she sees them re approach.

Penn (as Marathon): What'd you guys grab?

Cameron (as Emma): Alcohol.

Kit (as Birdie): Woo~!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Drinks. Yes.

Penn (as Marathon): Indiscriminate. Yes.

Cameron (as Emma): Tropical alcohol.

Penn (as Marathon): Ahh.

Kit (as Birdie): OoOh.

Penn (as Marathon): Yum.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah I'm going for proper spa atmosphere.

Sydney: Cassidy is obviously exercising discipline over herself and she takes a swig from her drink and looks at Marathon and then at Birdie in the eyes.

Cameron: Emma walks over to the edge of the pool where Birdie is at and kneels down and offers her one of the two drinks that she's gotten her left hand.

Cameron (as Emma): Would you like a drink?

Kit: Birdie will gladly accept and is favoring her left arm, so she'll take it with her left arm in order to keep it out of the water.

Kit (as Birdie): Um mhm.

Penn (as Marathon): Can you submerge that arm, Birdie? You've got - is that - you've got something there. I hope that was not rude to say.

Kit (as Birdie): No no it's it's I mean like I can, it's just like it gets it's like more sensitive than other parts of my body I guess because scar tissue is weird in sometimes it's numb sometimes it's not. And so I just kinda like to be more careful when the water is super warm.

Kit: The reason that Birdie's favoring her left arm is because of a sizable burn scar that goes about from near her elbow up to her shoulder in one part and then in the second part, it goes down onto the outside of her forearm, as if when she had gotten it she had been blocking um the rest of her body from taking damage. It's a kind of mottled pink burn scar. It's not super graphic or anything, but it is noticeable.

Nick: And as Birdie's scar is mentioned out loud, you all can't help but look around and see that all of you have scars to some extent.

Penn: As Marathon sits up straight to both admire and observe Birdie's scars, it's more clear that she has many tightly healed white rivets over her body, including a few on her face from very thin speed skates that were used in ice derby and the many accidents that occurred from within the sport. The scars are more concentrated as they run down to her forearms and continue throughout her whole body but are less concentrated away from her limbs. She's got three very noticeable scars on her face - one over her eye that has also gone gray, one just under her eye that goes over her nose, and one that trails down over her lip.

Kit (as Birdie): Those all from skating, Marathon?

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah, and [rueful laugh] skating antics. Ice Derby, you know, we -

Sydney (as Cassidy): The back alley brawls?

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah, yeah. Brawls, um the game itself, you know the occasional frisky business um. But Birdie, you you - uh yeah, these are all uh, yeah, ice skate related. Speed skate related specifically, they're very sharp.

Penn: Marathon's face goes very serious.

Penn (as Marathon): Very sharp. Seen too many lost arms, so

Kit (as Birdie): [shudder noise]

Cameron (as Emma): Ugh.

Penn (as Marathon): I'm lucky to have the ones I do.

Sydney (as Cassidy): What a safe sport.

Penn (as Marathon): Well, that's part of the part of the excitement. But um, yeah, Birdie uh where'd you, where'd you garner these from? If you've got you know, this, the big one you're just showing us but where are some of these other ones from, if you don't mind me asking. You can also just give me a little tap out if you don't don't want to share.

Kit (as Birdie): No, I mean, it's okay. I don't have any reservations I guess about them. I mean, you know, it's mercenary work. You're bound to get banged up in one way or another. Uh,

Cameron (as Emma): You can get hurt during mercenary work?

Kit (as Birdie): Who would have thunk -

Sydney (as Cassidy): Oh~.

Kit (as Birdie): - that this line of work would of-

Sydney (as Cassidy): I never knew.

Sydney: Cassady gestures to the sling she's currently wearing.

Cameron (as Emma): I know Cassidy, I'm surprised too.

Cameron: Emma walks behind Marathon and passes her one of the two drinks she has remaining and then plops on the other empty side of the pool and sticks her legs in and starts enjoying her drink.

Penn (as Marathon): Um, yeah. Besides the uh, you know, the obvious - the face one that was, and the burn one, quite a few of the ones that I have are actually from the accident that threw me off of Sasnak. You know, you fall fall quite a distance and it uh, [sharp inhale] leaves a couple marks.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yep~.

Penn (as Marathon): That's gotta be... yeah.

Sydney: Cassidy walks over and takes the last corner of open tub, putting just her feet and calves in.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, it's, I mean, you know, there are other ones, but those are just kind of like, I spent a year with a motorcycle gang. So that's kind of par for the course as well.

Penn (as Marathon): Do you have any road rash scars?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, I have a couple.

Kit: And she'll - she won't get up out of the water, but she'll shift her knee up to show her right calf that has some lighter colored scars that are whitish and they're more line based with a couple of direct spots that shows that it was definitely caused by more of a grooved pavement of some sort.

Kit (as Birdie): Uh. Yeah, I mean, you can like kind of see it. I won't, like get up and do like a full showcase. But you know, it's,

Penn (as Marathon): We would be happy to see, but no pressure.

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh] Yeah, I'm sure. I mean, you know,

Sydney: Cassidy takes a long drink of her drink and isn't looking at anything in particular.

Kit: Birdie grins and shakes her head just

Kit (as Birdie): There are, you know, incidental stories. It's just how it happens. So, I mean, you know, you know?

Penn (as Marathon): Well, I think scars are so cool. They're like - scars are just like, I don't know, it's like storybook on your body, you know?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah. What about you Cassidy? I don't think I've heard -

Penn (as Marathon): Yeah you told us about the one on your face.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah there seems to be something going on with your shoulder.

Kit (as Birdie): Oh!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, I don't know, this one is kind of like still red and mad. I wonder what that could have come from.

Penn: Marathon starts rubbing the back of her neck and looks away.

Penn (as Marathon): [sucks air through teeth]

Sydney (as Cassidy): No, yeah. You got the face story recently, I guess. Birdie I think Emma caught you up once you joined back up again.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, yeah. Um.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, we had a super fun and uplifting storytime.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, I bet.

Cameron (as Emma): Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): It's we yeah, very all good emotions when someone leaves the group in the middle of a fight. Well to end the fight, but the fight was ended.

Penn (as Marathon): We don't have to go there. We we are one big happy Patina family, right? Who are all going to stick together from now on.

Penn: Marathon awkwardly pulls a thumbs up.

Kit: Birdie's smile is faltered just a little bit but she also puts a thumbs up and just

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, it was um, it was a conversation but you know, Emma gives good hugs.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yes.

Kit (as Birdie): And is lovely. You're lovely, Emma.

Cameron (as Emma): Thank you.

Sydney (as Cassidy): But besides this one,

Sydney: Cassidy goes down her torso and down one leg pointing at the most obvious scars. There's a bullet hole in her upper abdomen that Emma also had helped patch from early in the Patina days. There's a couple of long scrapes. There's what looks like a blade puncture wound in the meat of her thigh. There's another bullet hole in her calf - that one looks a little bit smaller and doesn't have the other side of it.

Penn (as Marathon): Damn Cassidy. How many times have you been shot?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, I mean, it depends how you count. At least four.

Cameron (as Emma): Uh bullets hitting you?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, well like because one of them -

Cameron (as Emma): Or arrows. Or arrows.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Oh arrows. Okay, well, then six?

Kit (as Birdie): [shudder noise]

Sydney (as Cassidy): It's mercenary work. I try not to be close but that means I yeah, I get more missiles. So this one Emma helped patch actually that was her first Patina combat so starting strong.

Cameron (as Emma): Yep.

Sydney (as Cassidy): That one was a pickaxe - don't, don't get close to angry miners.

Kit (as Birdie): Like Like,

Cameron (as Emma): [snort]

Kit (as Birdie): like

Cameron (as Emma): [overlapping] [laughing so hard you almost can't understand] Like the children or people who mine?

Kit (as Birdie): [overlapping] - the ones with pickaxes or the children?

Sydney (as Cassidy): No, it's children who live underground.

Kit (as Birdie): I know a couple of those.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, yeah. No miners with an E.

Cameron (as Emma): Mm.

Kit (as Birdie): Okay, okay.

Sydney (as Cassidy): The adults with pickaxes are likely to do more damage. But like, you know, at least my arms are mostly intact.

Sydney: And Cassidy shows off the extent of her current tattoos spread from her wrists up to getting onto her shoulder blades.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, but I have been a mercenary for you know, 10 years more. So you just kind of collect.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): Well, they are very - I am - I know they must hurt, but -

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well not not now except for this one.

Penn (as Marathon): - they are very cool. Yeah, well, that's what I mean. I guess they must they must have hurt in the past, but they are very cool and I don't know if that's any consolation, but

Cameron (as Emma): Worth it for the aesthetics.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yes, yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): [affirmative noise]

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Sydney: Cassidy turns around to gesture to the exit wounds of the two on her torso.

Kit (as Birdie): [shudder noise]

Penn (as Marathon): Ow~!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Look so aesthetic.

Kit (as Birdie): I mean, like some people think that scars are hot - and I'm one of them.

Penn (as Marathon): I mean, I'm just saying they're cool. Yeah, I mean,

Sydney: Cassidy does a full 360 before sitting back down again.

Penn (as Marathon): Bravo. Bravo,

Kit (as Birdie): Emma?

Cameron (as Emma): Yes.

Kit (as Birdie): Do you have a favorite scar? [laugh]

Cameron (as Emma): [laugh]

Kit (as Birdie): Maybe not favorite's the word, but you know what I mean?

Cameron (as Emma): I mean

Sydney (as Cassidy): Collection.

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm. Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Finely curated.

Cameron (as Emma): I have a very small finely curated collection.

Penn (as Marathon): Mmm. An indie scar collector.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, gathered from much less violent altercations in general, but but still violent, hence leading to the injury. But I've got this one,

Cameron: And Emma reaches up to just above her left temple and flips her hair over to the right side and shows there's a small three quarters inch bald spot about two inches back on her scalp.

Cameron (as Emma): This one was a rock that my cousin Xavier threw.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Ouch.

Penn (as Marathon): Dang.

Cameron: Emma flips her hair back over.

Cameron (as Emma): So not violent in the same way as mercenary combat, but still was a rock thrown at me.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): Do you have engine burns?

Cameron (as Emma): Oh pfft. Yeah.

Cameron: Emma holds both hands out in front of her and flips them over and back.

Penn (as Marathon): Mmmm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): My hands are a mess. [laughs in self taught mechanic] I've got

Sydney (as Cassidy): No natural heat protectant.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, I've got burns, cuts, just scrapes that never really seem to go away. It's yeah, it they're mostly just toughened at this point, but this is a collection I am continuously adding to.

Penn (as Marathon): And they're great hands, may I say?

Cameron (as Emma): Thank you?

Penn (as Marathon): Connected to great arms, connected to a great brain. Yes.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Arms directly to brain. Yes.

Cameron (as Emma): Thank you.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm.

Penn (as Marathon): Great personality.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, nothing in the middle there either.

Cameron (as Emma): Uh huh.

Sydney: Cassidy takes a another sip of her drink and is not looking at anything in particular.

Cameron (as Emma): I mean, the other major ones, um I guess this one.

Cameron: Emma rotates so that the group can see her back and reaches an arm around and points at a spot that is covered by the mesh, so it's difficult to make out but you can tell that it's a different color than the rest of her skin.

Cameron (as Emma): This I got kicked by a horse.

Kit (as Birdie): Oh!

Penn (as Marathon): Ooh. Ow.

Cameron (as Emma): So

Penn (as Marathon): Fuck.

Cameron (as Emma): That was fun. I only - luckily it was it wasn't a little bit lower, or that would have been super bad, but it still was not fun and I bruised a bunch of ribs and fractured two of them.

Penn (as Marathon): Oof.

Cameron (as Emma): So yeah, once again, violent but not in the same sort of way at all. And

Sydney (as Cassidy): It was just a little bit of horseplay.

Cameron (as Emma): Mm. Mhm. Big horse though.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): Big horse. And then this one.

Cameron: And Emma lifts her left leg so that her foot is resting up on the edge of the pool again, and points to two puncture wound scars on the side of her left calf.

Cameron (as Emma): These two were I got bitten by a dog. Um.

Cameron: And the scars are about three and a half, four inches apart.

Cameron (as Emma): And it looks like it was a really impressive dog because I got a bit when I was like four or five. [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Oh yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): So I grew [laugh] and the scars got farther apart, so now it kind of looks like I was bitten by a dinosaur.

Penn (as Marathon): You really did live around animals, huh?

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah. And cousins, which -

Penn (as Marathon): [overlapping] I can't believe how

Sydney (as Cassidy): [overlapping] Yeah, hopefully your cousins aren't biting your -

Cameron (as Emma): [overlapping] - one could argue - Yeah,

Penn (as Marathon): [overlapping] - also animals, argue right?

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah, but besides other just like random, I fell down and got a scrape discolorations and random other mechanical injuries that escaped my hands, that's kind of what I got going on.

Penn (as Marathon): Well, it's a very admirable collection, Miss Emma.

Kit (as Birdie): Uh huh.

Cameron (as Emma): Thank you. I am trying to keep it a small collection. I think it's more special

that way. So I'm going to try to avoid adding to it.

Penn (as Marathon): We are all very uh, beautiful individuals with scars that are very visually appealing.

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Mhm. Mhm.

Kit (as Birdie): Do you guys have favorites? Is that like weird to have like a favorite scar?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well on you guys or on me?

Kit (as Birdie): Like on yourself. Or like the one with the best story because I have an octopus one.

Cameron (as Emma): What?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Shaped like an octopus?

Penn (as Marathon): Like an octopus? Like a birthmark?

Kit (as Birdie): I not told you guys about the Sasnak octopi?

Cameron (as Emma): You mentioned them.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah.

Penn (as Marathon): I think I've heard something about them.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Is it-

Cameron (as Emma): How are they scarring you??

Penn (as Marathon): You said you had a sib who had a pet?

Kit (as Birdie): Okay so they're very they're very vicious. Okay? No, I never did because I'm not crazy. Um my older sibling, Juno, was convinced that they were gonna train [sigh], train an octopus. It's name was Biscuits. It's name was always Biscuits. I don't even know if it was the same octopus anymore. But like the octopus would get out sometimes because they're very smart and so sometimes it would be like Russian roulette or like one of us would just be sleeping and we wake up to an octopus attacking.

Penn (as Marathon): Chomping on you?

Kit (as Birdie): Well, it's not like chomping, it's like

Sydney (as Cassidy): They have beaks, right?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, they have like beaks in the middle of their body. Like where their little mouth is.

Penn (as Marathon): I thought it was teeth.

Kit (as Birdie): And so if you let your hand down by accident, and it just was a night that Biscuits was feeling particularly restless, you'd sometimes get an octopus bite on your hand.

Cameron (as Emma): So it was like a monster under your bed.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Thats -

Penn (as Marathon): And so that's your favorite scar?

Cameron (as Emma): [here comes the science brain] Aren't octopi supposed to be kept in water?

Kit (as Birdie): Well, like yeah. We had like a little - Juno kept up a little tank, but like they're technically like, weirdly amphibious. Like, like, you know, they're not supposed to be out of the water for super long time, but they've also Sasnak octopuses are weird. I just don't question it.

Penn (as Marathon): And I I didn't - I didn't have the best, the best attention in animals class, but octopus have beaks?

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, because they got it they got to like chew their food somehow to make it like digestible.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah they like crack open the clams or whatever.

Penn (as Marathon): Instead of teeth, huh?

Kit (as Birdie): Mhm. So they're pretty sharp and pretty powerful and yeah, I mean like it's not like like it's just like the weirdest one that like, you know, I think it's my favorite because it's a funny story to tell people and watch their faces because y'all's faces were just really funny to watch right now.

Penn (as Marathon): But it's on your hand?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, I mean, I'm impressed that you're able to watch our faces.

Kit (as Birdie): Do you have something to share, Cassidy?

Cameron (as Emma): [sigh]

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh]

Sydney: Cassidy stands up and takes six steps over and puts her feet in the cold pool.

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh]

Cameron (as Emma): [chuckle]

Penn (as Marathon): Oh, things getting too warm for you Cassidy?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Just temperature regulating.

Penn (as Marathon): [overlapping] Fair enough.

Kit (as Birdie): [overlapping] That's very smart.

Penn (as Marathon): Yup.

Kit: Birdie does hold up her hand and it's got a weird shaped bite scar. [laugh] It's sizable enough that it's clear that whatever octopus Juno was raising was not small.

Penn (as Marathon): Um.

Cameron (as Emma): Huh.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah.

Cameron (as Emma): It never occurred to me that that was a way that you could get an injury.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah, we're gonna have to brief you guys on like the octopus invasion that's going on in Sasnak.

Penn (as Marathon): Invasion?!

Kit (as Birdie): It's not like an invasion, what's it called?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, just like stay in the busy areas and I should be okay, right?

Kit (as Birdie): You you you would think.

Penn (as Marathon): Birdie, I'm scared.

Cameron (as Emma): I mean apparently not if we're seeing Birdie's family.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Oh.

Penn (as Marathon): This making me frightful.

Cameron (as Emma): - because they just have octopuses.

Kit (as Birdie): It's it's not like bad bad. It's just like if you go down a dark alley, sometimes they're there.

Cameron (as Emma): What? [laugh]

Kit (as Birdie): I don't know how to explain this to you guys!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well okay, but would you rather there be an octopus in an alley or like a mugger?

Kit (as Birdie): A mugger!

Penn (as Marathon): A mugger every time.

Kit (as Birdie): A mugger.

Sydney (as Cassidy): No, but an octopus you could just like walk away from.

Kit (as Birdie): No. [voice shuddering in I've seen things]

Penn (as Marathon): I don't know.

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh] They're vicious.

Penn (as Marathon): An octopus is just too much of an unknown. I just learned they have beaks.

Cameron (as Emma): I think the shock factor of the octopus is what's making that more of a concern, I think.

Kit (as Birdie): Yeah. When you turn down a dark alley, it's like okay, fork found in kitchen, there's a mugger in the alley. But like when you have an octopus that can blend into the walls because they have camouflaging, camouflaging agents if you guys forgot, they like sneak up on you.

Penn (as Marathon): Okay, we got to stop -

Cameron (as Emma): So many arms.

Penn (as Marathon): - talking about octopuses or I'm not gonna be able to swim anymore.

Cameron (as Emma): [delighted laugh]

Penn: Marathon has pulled her feet out of the water and has her knees tucked up.

Kit (as Birdie): It's okay -

Cameron (as Emma): Did y'all ever have the fear that there was definitely a shark in the pool? [laugh]

Kit (as Birdie): No just octopuses.

Penn (as Marathon): No!

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing] Are you gonna have that fear now?

Penn (as Marathon): Now!

Cameron (as Emma): [laughing] Sorry.

Kit (as Birdie): [giggle]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Hey did you guys know that our - the old Patina captain once punched a shark in the face?

Cameron (as Emma): I did.

Kit (as Birdie): [dies with laughter turning into coughing]

Sydney (as Cassidy): I'm not gonna try and retell the story because I can't do it as well as he could, but

Penn (as Marathon): Punched a shark.

Kit (as Birdie): Uh huh.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, he was like 16.

Penn (as Marathon): Well, he must have passed on some of that toughness to you, Miss Cassidy.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, I think it's just that everyone - like there's always - everyone's childhood is something like, I don't know, life shaping. Emma's got cows kicking her.

Cameron (as Emma): I mean yes. [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Or horses?

Kit (as Birdie): [laughing] Yeah what was the most traumatic thing that happened to you as a child?

Sydney (as Cassidy): Well, the most traumatic thing that happened to me?

Kit (as Birdie): No, [laugh] we don't have to get into this. Wait! Wait! Wait! We don't have to get into this!

Penn (as Marathon): Okay whoa~. Yeah! [laughing] Trauma night at the hot springs.

Kit (as Birdie): This is not where I wanted this to go.

Cameron (as Emma): Yeah I think that this is definitely the best situation to have all of those conversations.

Sydney (as Cassidy): No, yeah well.

Cameron (as Emma): Everyone is super focused right now. I can tell.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yeah, everyone. We're just really exposed in our life histories and everything else.

Penn (as Marathon): [full of wonder] There's coconut in this drink.

Kit (as Birdie): [laugh]

Sydney (as Cassidy): Yes?

Cameron (as Emma): It's tropical.

Sydney (as Cassidy): Did you just try it?

Penn (as Marathon): It's, yeah. I did not think it was actually gonna be good, but I haven't had like a topical drink, I don't think, in a long time.

Sydney: Cassidy has raised an eyebrow and is looking only at Marathon's eyes.

Cameron (as Emma): [slowly] You doubted Cassidy's skills?

Penn (as Marathon): Wait Cassidy - you made this?

Sydney (as Cassidy): [duh] Yeah. I mean, like,

Penn (as Marathon): What~!

Sydney (as Cassidy): Cocktail mixing is not that far from cooking. It's still just like put a pile of flavors in that thing together. Just it's a glass instead of a bowl.

Penn (as Marathon): Miss Cassidy - this is terrific. Wow. I didn't even realize you made this. I thought this was a Camden special. You're very impressive with a shaker. I would uh [short laugh], I would love to see you work with one some time.

Penn: And Marathon gives a little wink.

Sydney: Cassidy opens her mouth and then closes it.

Kit (as Birdie): [annoying younger sister is back] Aw. I mean what?

Nick: And the Patina continues getting to know each other, enjoying the night air and the symphony of crickets in the quiet evening. We see Shorty the cat, on a table inside the resort, casually knocking a metal vase of flowers to the ground before hopping down after it and beginning to feast on the bouquet.
